Prostate Cancer Treatment
Prostate Cancer is a form of cancer that develops in the prostrate, a gland in the male reproductive system. Most prostate cancers are slow growing; however there are cases of aggressive prostate cancers. The cancer cells may metastasize (spread) from the prostrate to other parts of the body, particularly the bones and lymph nodes if not treated in early stages. Prostate cancers cause pain, difficulty in urinating, problems during sexual intercourse, erectile dysfunction or death. Other symptoms can potentially develop during later stages of the disease.
The Departments of Urology & Oncology at Columbia Asia Hospitals offer a wide range of services for urological/oncology related diseases. The consultants in the respective departments are highly qualified and experienced in the latest techniques in the field, including LASER surgery and minimally invasive techniques that enable a patient to return to their normal activity much quicker as compared to conventional techniques. The departments have handled complicated procedures including removal of a 350 gm prostate.
Surgery is a common choice if the cancer has not spread outside the gland (stage T1 or T2 cancers).
The main type of surgery for prostate cancer is known as RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY. In this procedure, the surgeon removes the entire prostate gland along with some of the tissue around it, including the seminal vesicles.
